‘‘Adding a new purpose and value to materials has always been important to me. Offering a different perspective through design, especially in the current times, is something that every designer should keep in mind.’’
Öykü Baştaş, as part of the Samsung Eco-Package project, designed modules that can be transformed into furniture such as seating units and coffee tables by combining cardboard surfaces in various ways.
Working in the fields of fashion and architecture, Öykü frequently travels and draws inspiration from different cities around the world. She began her design idea with cardboard collected for recycling on the streets of New York. Stacking cardboard on top of each other creates a strong surface capable of carrying human weight. In line with this, Öykü used layering techniques in her design.
The fact that Samsung TV boxes are made entirely from recycled materials supports Öykü's idea of adding a new function and value to waste materials.
When assembling cardboard pieces on top of each other or side by side, Öykü minimizes the carbon footprint by using woven strips instead of adhesive. The colorful strips, reminiscent of belts commonly used in fashion design and styling, make it easier to personalize the modules as they can be combined in various ways.
