Commons & Communities Istanbul, as part of World Architecture Week, commenced with a seminar on October 6th at Salt Galata.
The exhibition, curated by the In-Between Design Platform and led by the Danish Cultural Institute in Turkey, was hosted by Salt and took place from October 6th to November 6th, 2022, in Istanbul.
The Commons & Communities Global Architecture Exhibition aimed to bring together different solution proposals and perspectives from Brazil, China, Denmark, Turkey, and the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania). This exhibition will be transformed into an outdoor exhibition for the 28th UIA World Architecture Congress to be held in Copenhagen in 2023.
The curation by the In-Between Design Platform focuses on a 'culture of communal living' by responding to global trends that involve different voices in decision-making processes. In today's context, the user is actively involved in the design process from the beginning, becoming a profile that completes the design actively and inclusively. This democratic approach transforms the perception of "designing for society" into "designing together."
Today's architect plays the role of a consultant and facilitator, helping communities build the spaces they want to live in and fostering interdisciplinary dialogues.
In the context of all these changing global dynamics, the projects selected for the Commons & Communities Istanbul Exhibition reflect architecture as a powerful tool that transforms society collectively, while respecting all living organisms on our planet.
The Commons & Communities Istanbul Program, in parallel with World Architecture Week, is conducted by the Danish Cultural Institute in Turkey and curated by the In-Between Design Platform. It is hosted by Salt and has received support from the Danish Ministry of Culture, the Danish Arts Foundation, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Danish Embassy in Ankara. The exhibition production is managed by Technowood, and Samsung is the technology partner for the event.
