‘‘Designing to honor an important craft value that we leave behind through design, and the creative women behind this value, is very rewarding for me."
Ilke Beyaz designed a lighting fixture in the form of a pentagonal prism using television boxes as part of the Samsung Eco-Package project.
Ilke Beyaz combines craft heritage and female labor through her handwoven kilim brand Figure, creating social impact through design.
Ilke aims to illuminate the weaving tradition that has been overshadowed with the spread of mechanization today and to shed light on craftswomen.
Ilke used 12 pentagonal surfaces obtained from Samsung TV boxes and sewed them together using leftover yarns from looms, which were naturally dyed. This method of assembly aligns with Samsung's environmentally friendly packaging approach that doesn't use wire staples.
The designs on the fixture reflect the phases of the moon, celebrating female artisans and handcrafting. Simultaneously, the light seeping through the yarns serves as both a functional lighting tool and a representation of the light of these dedicated craftswomen.
